CHR « La Citadelle »

Transformation of the entrance hall of the CHR “La Citadelle” in Liège and construction of the new glass canopy.

The main entrance of the CHR “La Citadelle” hospital underwent a complete renovation and reorganization, with completion at the end of 2019, following several construction phases spread over approximately 18 months, covering a site of +/- 3,350 m².

Overall, in a spirit of renewal, the hall’s layout is defined by curves, sinuosity, and light, creating modern, sleek, and welcoming spaces.

The entire set of new arrangements, and particularly the new glass canopy preceded by a canopy (a dynamic and airy structure) was designed and realized to revitalize and structure the hospital’s main entrance. They allow :

  • A reorganization of patient and public reception functions, optimizing circulation and waiting areas.
  • Improved visibility of reception functions and a clear enhancement of natural light within the hall.
  • Optimization of safety – protection of vehicles and people (drop-off zone under the canopy), user safety, compliance with standards and regulations, etc.

Beyond the quality management required for the proper development of this type of project, a significant constraint in the design and realization of the new entrance hall was ensuring public access and circulation throughout the construction period (approximately 18 months). More than 8,000 people pass through the hall daily, and it was impossible to reroute these flows to another building access.

The impact of the interventions was therefore rationalized and calculated to meet needs without altering the original image of the CHR “La Citadelle” site and building.
