We recently supported Liège Airport in the compliance upgrade of Building B48, dedicated to its function as a Border Control Post (BCP) for the import of live animals (veterinary inspections, quarantine procedures and release for circulation on the Belgian and European markets), in accordance with the requirements of the FASFC (Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain).
As architects, our mission consisted in rethinking the internal organisation and circulation flows (veterinary, quarantine, airside and landside) in order to ensure operational continuity, including in the event of extended quarantine periods.
The building can now operate as a single unit or be divided into two independent zones, providing a high degree of operational flexibility.
From an architectural perspective, the project follows a low-impact compliance strategy, including:
- Measured interventions on the building envelope,
- Preservation of existing materials and colour schemes,
- Discreet integration of new technical elements.
On the airside, the creation of a new ramp and a concrete loading dock, together with a self-supporting canopy on the rear façade, now enables safer and more protected loading and unloading operations, both for the animals and for staff.
The signage has also been clarified in order to clearly identify the function of the building.
This project helps to secure a strategic activity, while improving working conditions and animal welfare.
